Jean Baptiste Edouard Detaille, who died on December 23 at the age of sixty-four, was the favourite pupil of Meissonier, and turned his attention to military subjects as the result of his experiences during the Franco-Prussian War. For forty years he painted picture after picture illustrating glorious pages in the military history of his country and


his popularity continued to grow until it became world-wide. He was a persona friend of King Edward, who frequently visited his studio in Paris, and last year, in conjunction




with M. Georges Scott-Detaille s most famous pupil, whose work is well known to our readers-the artist designed the series of new uniforms for the French Army
