Hardinge’s life as he was passing along the Ghandni Chowk on his way to hold a Durbar in the Dewan-i-Am. The bomb, which was thrown by a miscreant who is still at large




exploded in the howdah of their Excellencies, killing one of the attendants and grievously wounding Lord Hardinge himself. Before losing consciousness his Excellency ordered the ceremony to continue, and the Durbar was held according to programme, Sir Guy Fleetwood, the senior member of Council, taking the part of his disabled Chief.
