“Here’s the Most Important Single Factor— The Automatic Expansion Valve”
Right here is where we control the amount of liquid ammonia fed into the Expansion or Cooling Coils.
It is so designed that enough ammonia will enter the coils at all times to fill them with liquid throughout their length. Without this device too much ammonia might enter, the liquid carrying through the coil and vaporizing in the pipes leading back to the Compressor—which would be needless waste. If too little ammonia was fed, the Coils would not do all the work they should—and a superheated gas would be returned to the Compressor.
Either too much or too little ammonia means waste—a thing that is avoided in the Automatic plants by the Automatic Expansion Valve.”
