THE FIRST FACTORY
WITH CELLULAR WALLS
The following letter from Messrs. Horlick’s Malted Milk Company, Ltd. should be of especial interest to architects, builders, and those who contemplate building factories, flats or houses.
Messrs. London Brick Company & Forders, Ltd., October 24th, 1929 Africa House, Kingsway, W.C.2. Dear Sirs,
We think you will be interested to learn of the considerations which prompted our use of your Phorpres Cellular Flettons in the imposing extension to our works at Slough.
Our Architect and Contractors were of the opinion that your bricks would improve the insulation of sound, heat and moisture without decreasing the strength of the building.
Our Works, situated as they are within a “ disturbance ” distance of the railway line, require, in the interests of our workers, that we shoidd ensure an adequate insulation from noise ; your bricks, our Architect feels, are ideal in this respect, and they certainly give that dryness and evenness of temperature so essential to the production of our Malted Milk. Furthermore, we find their lightness makes them quicker and easier to handle.
We are glad to intimate that in our opinion the decision was a wise one.
Yours faithfully,
HORLICK’S MALTED MILK COMPANY, LTD. (Signed) O. P. Horlick, Director.
PHORPRES CELLULAR FLETTONS
These patented bricks greatly improve insulation. Their 3-cell formation makes them 20% lighter than ordinary bricks : the dead weight of buildings in which they are employed is thereby reduced by nearly a quarter, and a proportionate economy in steelwork is possible, whilst the strength and security of the building is increased.
