THE journey of Robert Adam to
Italy in 1752, whence he returned impregnated with classical forms and motives, thrust the Chippendale rococo out of favor and placed the Adam Brothers’ the Adelphi” in a situation of almost autocratic leadership in art. Their influence is felt throughout all the designs of the last half of the 18th and the early years of the 19th centuries.
And no modern style has ever main
tained its predominance as has the Adelphi for in no other is there such charm of pseudo classical detail, dainty proportions and delicate colorings.
