as it does not entail conditions which are physically injurious, is acceptable to him, and he will not readily forsake the crowded streets of the great city, and the multifarious interests which the great city provides, even for quite model dwellings in the vicinity of a factory situated in the country. Within four miles of Trafford Park there is a population of over one
million; within a radius of 25 miles there are 4½ millions; within 50 miles there are 10½ millions; and within 100 miles there is one-half of the population of Great Britain. The site is diamond-shaped, measuring three miles in length by one mile in breadth, and is as flat as a bowling green. The Manchester Ship Canal brings Trafford Park into direct water touch with every part of the world, while the Bridgwater Canal links it up with many other canals throughout the country, and these canal facilities assure cheap movements of freight. The railway system owned by the Trafford Park Company, is a self-contained entity, which is physically connected with the main lines of the country and also with the railways of the Manchester Ship Canal Company which runs alongside the berth of every steamer in the Manchester Dock. Locomotives collect and deliver railway wagons twice daily at the traders’ sidings to or from the main line companies. The main water supply is drawn from the Manchester Corporation system, while local supplies are also available in the red sandstone underlying the estate. Gas and electricity for power and lighting purposes are supplied on the estate, while at the western extremity of the site is extensive storage for liquid fuel, and at the eastern end are subsidiary depots for secondary or general retail distribution of oil, thus ensuring the delivery at a point convenient to the area of consumption. The railway lines traverse the whole site. A factory may be anywhere in the Park, SKYLINE VIEW OF MESSES. TURNER BEOS., MESSRS. TAYLOR BROS., AND MESSRS. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS’
