recognition of the fact that a cinema, when actually functioning, is a place of darkness relieved only by the brilliance of the picture itself. There is, therefore,
complete justification for a very considerable formal
emphasis to the proscenium opening itself and where, even if it is neces
sary to practise a rather strict economy in costs, this is the one place where one may expect to find a certain degree of architectural ceremony ex
pressed. In this case the emphasis of the screen is admirably achieved, and one need only take a single glance at the interior in order to recog
nise the function of the room. The rear and side elevations have obviously been treated in the simplest manner possible.
The latter, showing a blank wall with parapet and a stone string which is returned round brick piers placed at regular intervals, is an orderly composition, but it cannot be said that at the rear of the building an elegant result has been achieved.
The chimney, leaping across space and cutting the gable end in two, is a
somewhat restless feature, while the moulding of apertures near the ground level fail to establish themselves as a coherent pattern of fenestration. It is possible, however, that this fagade is not exposed
to public view, and doubtless the difficulties involved
in a more decorative treatment of this part of the building would have been considerable.
A notable feature of the plan is the covered corridor which leads to the entrance to the unbooked seats, a provision which
is highly desirable in country districts.
