The second preliminary competition will be open to the fifteen men before specified and five others chosen out of the participants in the first competition.
This second competition will consist of a finished sketch rendered en loge during 24 consecutive hours, beginning at 9 a. m. on Saturday, March 31. The places where this will be held are to be communicated subsequently to those eligible to compete.
New York students desiring to compete must notify the secretary of the committee before Monday, March 5 ; those in other cities must notify the gentlemen mentioned above.
For the final competition five students will be chosen from the second preliminary, who will go en loge on Saturday, May 19, for the sketch in New York. The finished drawings will be rendered en loge under the surveillance of the Committee in New York only, and must be delivered to the committee on Monday, July 23, before noon.
The scholarship will be awarded to the winner of the final competition under the conditions mentioned above, and the four other competitors will receive $100 each, provided the committee considers their work satisfac
tory. The winning projet will belong to the Society.
The five winners of the second preliminary will be awarded two values in Class A.
The ‘ Paris Prize” man shall yearly send to the committee, at its expense, for inspection and exhibition, not less than two École projets and such other work as they may require.

Jamestown, N. Y.—Mr. H. W. Dyer, formerly architect at the Art Metal Construction Co., has moved to New York, where he will open an architectural office.
Duluth, Minn.—Messrs. W. T. Bray and C. E. Nystrom, architects, have consolidated their business interests and are now located in the former’s offices in the Palladio building, under the firm name of Bray & Nystrom.

Howarth Reversible Sash and Sash Center Company, Detroit, Mich., issue a complete descriptive catalogue of their centers for all kinds of windows. A valuable feature of the illustrations are folding plates showing, to one-half natural scale, the details of construction of frames and sashes and the application of the appropriate center to each.
NOTES AND CLIPPINGS.
Largest Painting on Record.—What is claimed to be the largest picture ever painted is now in the Galerie des Machines, Paris. It is the work of M. G. Roussel. The canvas has an area of 75 square
metres, and it is intended for the municipal building at Ivy. The picture represents the mob returning from the Bastile after the taking of that fortress, and it includes more than 1,000 life-size figures. —New York Herald.

Abita Springs, La.—It is reported that Andrew J. Bryan, of New Orleans, is preparing plans for a 4-story $400,000 hotel.
Albany, N. Y.—The trustees of Union
University have decided to erect a new building for the Albany Law School, at a cost of $100,000. A committee consisting of Gen. Amasa J. Parker, Marcus T. Hun and Deputy Attorney-General Danford E. Ainsworth were appointed to arrange the preliminary details.
The trustees of the Historical and Art Society, it is stated, are. about to ask local architects to prepare plans for a 2-story and basement, 60 x 150-ft. building.
Ambridge, Pa.—The H. K. Porter Co., Farmers’ Bank Bldg., will build a large plant on a 40-acre site here for the manufacture of locomotives. Cost, $1,000,000. L
Athens, O.—Architects E. C. Van Leyen and E. A. Schilling, Detroit, Mich., have been commissioned to prepare plans for a high school building for the Board of Education, Athens, estimated to cost $100,000. The board will ask for proposals.
Atlantic City, N. J.—The plans prepared by Seymour Davis and Paul A. Davis, 3d, of Philadelphia, Pa., it is stated, have been accepted for the 3-story brick and stone 16-room school, which is to hi erected on Indiana Ave. Cost, $50,000.
