The Julia Armory Appleton Fellowship in Architecture, one of the best given in the university, has been awarded for next year to Ralph W. Varney, ’04, S. M. ’05. This Fellowship, which has an income of $1, 000 a year, is awarded to graduates in
the Department of Architecture who have taken the degree with distinction, or who have completed with distinction a year in the Graduate School. The selection was made on the basis of a competitive examination held last month, in which each candidate was examined on a special period of architectural development. The holder of the Fellowship is required to spend a
year in travel and study in Europe, under the general direction of the Professor of Architecture. He is required to submit monthly reports of his progress, and to send at the end of each half-year a measured drawing of some great European monument of architecture. He is also required to make during his stay in Europe a detailed study of a building or group of
