Brick was the only well-known material through which this effect could be obtained. Thirty different colors were selected and the gradation made so gradual that no break would be seen. This was accomplished by a mathematical mingling of each story-unit in percentages at the kiln. Blind masons could have laid the brick as delivered on the scaffold, for each shipment was mixed six times — from the kiln to the freight car; from the car to the
truck; from the truck to the lot; then placed on the hoist; from the hoist to the floor at which it was to be laid and from the floor to the scaffold. Although some floors, or units, contained six or eight different colors and a different percentage of each, the mingling was so perfect
